Activities

During the course of the school year we have a number of student centered activities at Galion Middle School.

In addition to our athletic programs we also have Student Council, Yearbook, and Choices (formerly Junior Teen Institute) as activities that any G.M.S. student may become involved with.

Those students who earn all A’s or all A’s and B’s are treated to an academic luncheon at the conclusion of each nine week grading period. These students receive a blue or orange card which entitles them to special discounts at school activities and community businesses. We also recognize those students who have no absences or tardies for nine weeks to a pizza and pop luncheon.

We conclude the school year with an academic breakfast at the Galion Middle School Cafetorium. Typically 100 students are included in each of these activities.

Students who earn no points of demerit on his/her discipline record for nine weeks attend our quarterly incentive activity. This activity includes a dance or a visit to the bowling alley. The main objective of this activity is to say “thanks” to those students who come to G.M.S. on a daily basis and follow the rules.

In May two special activities occur: our Spring Dance and our annual trip to Cedar Point. Both of these activities must be “earned”. The Spring Dance involves seventh and eighth grade G.M.S. students only. We want to give our sixth graders something to look forward to as a seventh grader. Any seventh or eighth grader who is on “Level III” (16 or more points of demerit on his/her discipline record) is ineligible to attend. This dance is not a formal dance, we ask that students dress in clothes that he/she may wear to a special occasion. Parents should not feel the need to spend big money for a “prom gown” or a tuxedo. On the other hand, jeans and tee shirts are inappropriate also. Any parent is invited to attend and help chaperone.

Those eighth graders who are not on Level III, have good attendance, and are passing ALL FOUR of their year long classes, are invited to attend our Cedar Point trip, which occurs the Friday before Memorial Day. This activity has been a long tradition at G.M.S. and is thoroughly enjoyed by our students, staff, and those parents who chaperone. We leave G.M.S. at 8:30 a.m. and return by 8:30 p.m.

Parents, please continue to encourage your child to work toward becoming involved in these special activities. We look forward to another exciting school year.
